Tailgate (n.)- an event, normally hosted in a field outside a sporting venue, characterized by a unique combination of expression of freedom and bacchanalian ruckus.
Don’t like the definition? Have more to add? Don’t care. Because tailgate style is the discussion today. Key components of any tailgating attire are comfort and versatility, all with a vintage nod . Choose wisely:
Gitman Vintage Chambray Shirt (Barneys.com)- Durable and vintage. I’ll take it.
KMW 1980 Hand Dye (ContextClothing.com)- These are the real deal. Limited edition and made in Japan. I won’t get into the process with which these are made, but it’s complicated. Worth the considerable down payment.
Barbour Waxed Vest (Orvis.com)- It isn’t a fall tailgate if a Barbour isn’t involved somehow. Wax on, not wax off.
Prada Wayfarer Sunglasses (Saks.com)- A classic wayfarer updated just enough to avoid cliche.
Seavees Bayside Moc High (Seavees.com)- Even if sneaker-boot hybrids weren’t totally in right now, I’d recommend these. It’s tough to argue cool with the ‘Purveyors of California Casual’.
Veranda Glasses (ColonelLittleton.com)- Found these in the most recent Garden & Gun: Monogrammed leather koozies. I don’t think I have to say anything else. These are awesome.
Maker’s Mark Bourbon- Nothing too fancy for a tailgate. Maker’s is the classic all-performance bourbon. Enjoy.

I understand this is a style blog, but I can’t imagine many people wearing no team gear to a football tailgate. I saw in a previous post where you included a vintage style Redskins shirt. It’d be great if there were more places to get stylish team gear.
I consider going to a game and tailgating as separate entities. Tailgate style, in this case, is more in reference to outdoor events like the Hunt or field parties outside crummy college football games rather than having a few beers in the parking lot before heading into the stadium. I’m not opposed to either, they are just different.
It’s too bad that stylish team apparel is almost an oxymoron these days. I agree, the distressed logo tri-blend Skins shirt is pretty awesome, but those these finds are few and far between. I’ll keep an eye out, though.
And my point about ‘no jerseys’ was in reference to actual teamwear; polyester just isn’t comfortable, so why wear it when you want to relax?
